Video Poker is a favored game that usually will be gambled on in casinos across the globe, or in your house on your personal computer, using an Internet connection. The game rules are very simple and consist of the player attempting to achieve the best combination of cards achievable in order to win money. In this respect it is very similar as a classic game of poker, minus the involvement with any other players. Of course, techniques employed during a physical game of poker, like bluffing, will be useless in Video Poker.

The game of Video Poker begins when the bettor inserts credits (whether it’s tokens, tickets or money) into the video poker machine and pushes the deal button. A hand of 5 cards will be "handed out" on the video screen.

The Video Poker machine also has buttons with ‘hold’ written on them, and players should now pick which cards to keep and which to throw away. For the cards the gambler would like to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons must be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can decide to keep any amount of cards they wish, from all to none.

After the gambler has chosen which cards he would like to keep, they should press ‘draw’, which will mean that any new cards will be dealt if desired. The hand is now finished, with the Electronic Poker machine analyzing the cards to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands shown on the pay out schedule.

Normally, the lowest winning hand on an Electronic Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money getting larger for each better hand. A common list of winning hands starts with jacks or better, and moves on to two pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It is obvious that the payout schedule can vary from machine to machine, so that discerning players are agile enough to choose the most beneficial ones each and every instance.

Once the first round has played out, the player can either choose to continue on and try to to maximize their earnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any cash that they may have won. Further, several versions of the game give the gambler an opportunity to double their wins, in which case another round is played. There are also variations among individual machines, with some virtual decks having wild cards and other varying characteristics to enhance playability.
